課程概述

This course explores important literature on Japanese and Korean musical cultures written in the Japanese and Korean languages with supplementary readings in English and other available languages. More emphasis will be put on contemporary popular music styles and scenes in the two countries. There are a substantial number of scholarly works that have not been introduced to the global academia mostly because they are written in the local languages. This course is intended to broadly introduce and critically review such domestic outputs according to a set of crucial topics and issues by way of putting the local production of knowledge in social context.

課程目標
“Their Perspectives” in the course title do not mean they are more authentic, legitimate or idiosyncratic. Throughout the course, it will turn out that they are often strongly influenced by traveling theories and diasporatic ideas in an era of globalization. But still, there are particular topics and themes that are especially at issue in the Japanese and Korean academia at a given period of time. Through a broad overview of relevant literature in the two countries, this course will seek for shared research interests and themes in Taiwan so as to theorize music cultures in more general terms.
課程要求
Language Proficiency:
The ability to read either Japanese or Korean materials is preferred but not required for the class from the outset. The instructor will encourage students to understand the main arguments and essential details of the readings by providing bibliography, key concepts and ideas of the reading assignment for each week, and the constant instruction of the languages as well as the social contexts. Students are expected to try hard to read the foreign texts in advance, to attend class regularly, and participate actively in class discussion and give presentations so as to build up their own research interests and topics.

Assignments:
1. Basically two students are responsible for the summarization of the two required readings for class discussion for each week. They don’t necessary have to submit their drafts in advance, but they can send them to me online for a prior check or printing if necessary. Please prepare copies for the whole class (about 20 copies) or ask me to photocopy the draft in advance. Students can also demonstrate audio-visual materials by utilizing PowerPoint or other devices.
2. Class presentation at the end of the semester. Please come to see me or let me know via email by the end of this year to clarify a topic.
3. 5 - 10-page term paper based on class presentation. Due by 1/12 by email or by hand.

Evaluation:
Attendance 30% Discussion 20%
Presentation 20% Term Paper 30%
